All these characteristics have led to the decision to preserve and promote this site by nominating the Mont Blanc massif as a UNESCO heritage site, with a joint campaign by the municipalities of Courmayeur and Chamonix.

Mont Blanc is also synonymous with mountaineering. We can’t fail to mention that mountaineering was truly born on this mountain, with the first ascent, in 1786, by the Frenchmen Balmat and Paccard.

"The inclusion of mountaineering – explained the mayor of Courmayeur – would make it possible to put the spotlight, at the international, national and local level, on the profound interdependence between cultural heritage and natural heritage, one of the primary engines behind the pact for the safeguarding of the immaterial cultural heritage of UNESCO."
